Is Your Insurance Still in Winter Mode?
Mar 24, 2026 || Hayley Hall, Insurance Agency Manager
Midwest winters have a way of putting things into hibernation. Motorcycles disappear into garages, boats get shrink-wrapped like leftovers, and RVs settle in for long winter naps while we all pretend that scraping ice off our windshields is a reasonable hobby.
Then suddenly one warm day shows up, and everyone has the same thoughts.
The motorcycles come out, the boats get hitched, and the campers are suddenly ready for road trips.
But before those engines fire up for their seasonal comeback, it’s worth asking one quick question:
Did your insurance wake up from hibernation too?
Why It Matters
It’s normal for people to reduce or cancel coverage when vehicles are put away for the winter. It can be a smart move when your motorcycle hasn’t moved since the fall, or your boat is just functioning as a very expensive piece of garage décor.
The important part is remembering to turn that coverage back on before the season starts again.
Every year we talk with members who are ready for seasonal firsts, only to realize their policy might still be in “winter mode.”
And while sunshine does many wonderful things, unfortunately reactivating insurance coverage is not one of them.
Don’t Forget Your “Toys”
Vehicles that commonly go into winter storage or get winterized include:
- Motorcycles
- Boats and jet skis
- Campers and RVs
- Classic or collector cars
- ATVs or side-by-sides
We call them toys, but they’re big investments. Making sure they’re properly insured before they hit the road, trail, or water is one of the easiest ways to avoid a stressful situation later.
If You Canceled Coverage for Winter
If you paused or canceled your policy during the colder months, now is the perfect time to reconnect with your insurance team.
Policies need to be restarted or reestablished and we may need to verify details about the vehicle before coverage becomes active again. The good news is that this process is usually quick and straightforward.
Your Coverage Checklist
Before taking a vehicle out for its comeback tour, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check the following:
- Confirm your insurance policy is active and up to date
- Verify liability and physical damage coverage
- Make sure trailers are covered if you tow your boat or camper
- Review deductibles and coverage limits
- Update us if anything about the vehicle has changed
A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
Spring and summer bring some of the best days of the year. So, before the season gets rolling, take a minute to make sure your coverage is ready. Give us a quick call and we’ll help you get everything set back up.
That way when the weather finally cooperates, the only thing you’ll need to worry about is remembering where you put the boat keys and whether the life jackets still fit after a winter of comfort food.
