Understanding insurance terms colorful background

When most families think about back-to-school season, they're checking off lists for backpacks, dorm décor, laptops, and last-minute Target runs. (Because somehow there's always one more thing.)

Insurance probably isn't on that list... but it should be.

Whether your student is heading across town or across the country, here are a few quick insurance reminders that can help you avoid surprises later.

Heading to College? Don't Forget About Renters Insurance.

If your student is living in a dorm or renting an apartment, renters’ insurance is one of the smartest (and most affordable) purchases you can make.

It can help protect belongings like:

  • Laptop and tablet
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Furniture
  • Gaming systems
  • Bike or scooter
  • Other personal items

Even better? Renters insurance can also provide liability coverage if your student accidentally causes damage to someone else's property or is responsible for certain injuries.

For just a few dollars a month, it can provide peace of mind that's well worth it.

Is Your Student More Than 100 Miles Away?

If your student is attending school more than 100 miles from home, let your insurance agent know.

Many insurance companies offer discounts for students who are away at school without a vehicle, and updating your policy helps ensure your coverage accurately reflects your family's situation.

A quick phone call could save you money.

Don't Forget Those Good Grades!

Here's some motivation beyond making the honor roll.

Many insurance carriers offer a good student discount for teens and college students who maintain qualifying grades.

If your student earns good grades, be sure to keep a copy of their report card or transcript and share it with your insurance agent. You may qualify for additional savings.

Add Insurance to Your Back-to-School Checklist

Before the school year begins, take just a few minutes to ask yourself:

  • Does my student need renters’ insurance?
  • Is my student attending school more than 100 miles from home?
  • Have I shared their latest grades to see if we qualify for a discount?

A quick review today could help protect your family and even lower your insurance costs.

As your kids head back to class, we're here to help make sure your insurance is ready for the new school year, too.
